9.9.5. Replacement of brake fluid



Observe precautionary measures during the work with brake fluid: it is toxic. Hit of brake fluid on wires, the plastic or painted details of a body can cause their damage. Therefore always enclose pure rags when filling in a tank. At hit of liquid on a detail at once wipe them with a pure rag.

Do not reuse the liquid merged from system: it is polluted, saturated air and moisture.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from air) therefore it cannot be stored in an open container.

Apply to gas station of a hydraulic system only the FMVSS 571.116 DOT 4 brake fluid.

Sequence of replacement of liquid in brake mechanisms:

  – back right;
  – back left;
  – forward right;
  – forward left;
  – coupling drive.



Replacement of brake fluid is recommended to be made with the assistant, having installed the car on a viewing ditch or a platform.

1. Uncover a tank of the main brake cylinder.
2. Clear the valve of production of air of dirt and remove its protective cap.
3. Put on one end of a rubber hose the valve and ship other end in a pure transparent vessel.
4. The assistant has to press sharply a pedal of a brake of 4-5 times and to leave a pedal pressed.
5. Unscrew on 1/2 – 3/4 turns the valve of production of air – old (dirty) brake fluid will begin to follow from a hose. At the same time the pedal of a brake has to move smoothly against the stop. As soon as liquid ceases to follow, wrap the valve of production of air.
6. Repeat operations 4 and 5 until new (pure) brake fluid begins to follow from a hose. Constantly you watch liquid level in a tank, without allowing its decrease MIN tags are lower, and if necessary add new brake fluid.
7. Replace with the same way liquid in other brake mechanisms and the drive of coupling.
8. Press several times a brake pedal. The course and resistance of a pedal have to be constants by each pressing. If these conditions are not satisfied, so air got to the brake system and it needs to be pumped over.
